Spicy & Flavorful Bombay Masala Sandwich!

If you are from Mumbai, there are around 99% chances that this is one of your favorite snacks!

Bombay, one of the most populous cities of the world and the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra, was re-named as Mumbai in the year 1995. Even though decades have passed since that time, still there are some things that will always have the term ‘Bombay’ glued to them, like Bombay Chowpatty and Bombay Masala Sandwich!

These spicy sandwiches made by street vendors of Mumbai, are vegetarian, nutritious, filling and so so delicious. You will find a sandwich stalls near all the schools, colleges, market places and railway stations of the city. This is the Indian take on your standard veg. club sandwich and believe me, they taste yummmy!

You can make this sandwich with or without cheese, even though I prefer the latter. You can eat them as it is or you can grill them….I prefer the latter! The key ingredients are the green chutney, the boiled potatoes and the chaat masala. You can substitute the chaat masala with the ready-made sandwich masala that you get very easily in stores nowdays. You can find the recipe of the green coriander-mint chutney on my blog as well.

I have not mentioned the exact measurements in this recipe because there aren’t any specific ones needed. Just use according to your own choice and preference.

So give this recipe a go and enjoy!!

Ingredients:

– 3 Bread slices ( I used whole-grain bread)

– Coriander-Mint chutney

– Butter

– Boiled and thinly sliced potatoes

– Sliced cucumbers

– Tomato rings

– Onion rings

– Chaat masala

– Grated cheese (optional)

– Salt and pepper to taste

Method:

– Spread a thin layer of butter on all the three slices of bread!

– On one of the slices, apply evenly a thick coating of chutney.

– Assemble some sliced cucumbers on it.

-Assemble the potato slices on them next.

– Sprinkle a generous amount of chaat masala to balance the blandness of the potatoes.

– Cover the potatoes with another bread slice, with the buttered side up.

– Top it off with the tomato and onion rings.

– Sprinkle generously your grated cheese and some more chaat masala.

– Lastly, top it off with salt and pepper.

– Cover your sandwich with the remaining slice, buttered side down.

– Put in the sandwich maker and grill.

– Serve hot with ketchup, mayonnaise and fries. Enjoy!

*Notes-

I have made a three-slice sandwich but you can make a two-slice sandwich as well. Assemble all the fillings and cheese on one slice, cover with the second slice and grill.

It had gotten me nostalgic about Mumbai. The yummiest sandwich which is an all time favourite since college days. I should say the favourite of the young college crowd.
